What Readers Says

This is a fantastic young adult novel. I like that this book includes representation of kids in adopted families and what they might feel. It is also a fantastic coming of age story set in a mythical universe.

The pace was gripping from the prologue onward, I didn’t want to put it down. The mix of prophecy, teenage life, and star, crossed romance kept me hooked. The balance between action and quieter moments worked well; the teenage banter gave needed relief from the intensity. . I’d definitely recommend it and eagerly read the sequel. The prophecy at the beginning gave me chills; I think removing it would hurt, because it sets the tone and stakes from the start.

“The story moved quickly in the opening and then slowed a bit once Lily’s everyday high school life was introduced. At times, I wanted slightly tighter pacing in the middle. The balance between show/tell was mostly solid, though some internal monologues ran long. I’d give this 4 stars. I would have preferred less early info, dump in the prophecy—it felt like foreshadowing overload. Without the exact prophecy, the mystery could’ve been stronger. Still, I’d recommend it and read the sequel.”

Thomas K.

“The book’s pace was steady—never rushed but also rarely dragging. What stood out most was the interplay between Lily’s teen struggles and her larger destiny; it made her feel relatable even as cosmic stakes loomed. The external conflicts (hunters, secrets, betrayal) balanced well with her internal struggle over identity. for me. I loved the prophecy and think cutting it would remove some of the mythic weight. Recommend wholeheartedly, and yes, I’d grab book two immediately.”

Jasmine L.

“For me, the pacing started out cinematic and compelling, then hit a lull in the early high school chapters before picking up again once Jaxon/Draykar’s true role came forward. I’d give it 4 stars. What I’d want different: maybe streamline a few of the teen “slice of life” chapters to keep tension higher. I’d still recommend it, though. As for the prophecy— removing it might actually help suspense. Right now, it telegraphs Lily’s importance a little too clearly.”

Mark D.

“The book felt like it moved at just the right pace for me: slower where relationships were being built, fast when the action scenes kicked in. The show/tell balance leaned more toward showing, which made Lily’s emotions resonate. I’d rate these 5 stars because I was swept up in the romance and destiny themes. I’d 100% recommend it and can’t wait for a sequel. The prophecy worked beautifully—it gave me that “chosen one” anticipation that I love.”

Sofia P.

“The pacing was a little uneven; sometimes the high school drama slowed things too much compared to the epic fantasy parts. I’d rate it 3.5 to 4 stars. I liked the action, but I wanted more of it sooner. I think if the prophecy at the beginning was hinted at instead of spelled out, the book would be stronger, it would let the reveals unfold more organically. I’d still read the sequel because I’m invested in Lily’s journey.”

Daniel H.

“Overall, the pace was moderate—not too fast, not too slow, though some readers may feel the first chapters linger. The mix of action, romance, and teenage slice,of,life was well, balanced. The book never tipped too far into angst or exposition. I’d give it 4.5 stars. The only tweak I’d want is trimming a few repetitive inner, thought passages. Would I recommend it? Yes, especially to fans of Throne of Glass or Fallen. I think the prophecy’s presence works, but it might be more impactful if shortened.”
